PERLEEEASE! Mr. Knapman, did you not blush?

...and this makes NESNO look modest!

Roger Knapman (Leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party) speech in the EU parliament!
Wednesday 17 November

European Council of 4 and 5 November 2004
"Mr President, Parliament will be pleased to know that the UK Independence Party were the lead players in the recent 'No' to the North-East Regional Assembly campaign in Britain. Seventy-three per cent of people in that region said they did not want any more Euro-bureaucracy. I wonder what percentage would vote to get rid of the already-existing regional assemblies, with their awful appointees and their corrupt practices?"

I know this is politics and I know that Mr. Knapman wishes to jump up and down to get some medals 'cos he's a politician and I know that he was more elusive than Lord Lucan in the North East during the referendum but you would think he would make the effort to get his facts right...IT WAS 78% Mr. Knapman!!!
Oh, and by the way, we are in the process of exposing the unelected assemblies so when we do I hope he will give us a call and we can help him with a factually correct statement claiming victory for that one as well.

Neil,
As I understand it UKIP is with you all the way in opposing Reigional assemblies.
As a South West UKIP party member I contributed £50 to your campaign as did many other UKIP members in varying amounts, I believe.
Is it also possible that Roger Knapman might have been slightly mis-reported, just enough to trigger your re-action? (An eight is easily turned into a three).
Our common goals are the right results i.e. we get our soverignty back & then trounce the traitors in Westminster.
As yet you have my support, I hope Roger has yours!

The UKIP grassroots such as yourself have been fantastically supportive of our campaign as usual, along with many others from different political parties who put the issue before party politics.
UKIP hierarchy were not behind us and allied themselves with the Conservative NESNO campaign thereby creating division with the People's Campaign.
The reason given was because I stood against UKIP in the European Elections (not quite sure where that leaves the Conservatives).
UKIP as a party played no role in the North East.Steve Allinson, Hartlepool UKIP (the only active and effective branch in the NE) had one appearance of note on Radio Newcastle and was only given 'ten minutes notice' (his words) by the party.
That aside, this is politics and Knapman has done what all politicians do.
We will continue to fight, as we have done since we entered the arena, on the issue in front of us.
We will also finish the job we started over two years ago and bring down the unelected assembly as well.

I think in most cases you have to distinguish between 1. the organisation 2. its leaders and 3. its ordinary members. As the UKIP leader, Mr Knapman has gone down in my estimation by making this false claim that UKIP, as an organisation, were the "lead players".

I'm also concerned about his casual sideswipe at the unelected assemblies for "their awful appointees and their corrupt practices". Some assembly members are "awful", others are decent enough people even if they're misguided. And while we know that this kind of remote and unaccountable organisation is potentially a breeding ground for "corrupt practices", I'm not sure that we've yet seen anything which could be described as "corrupt".

Sneaky, underhand, devious, deceitful, anti-democratic, supercilious, elitist, egotistical, self-seeking - all of those. But probably not actually "corrupt".

As former Old Labour supporter for over45years now UKIP member in the South East of England. In my opinion the most important issue today has to be the EU.We should be working together as the opposition do,united we win, divided we fall.Your group are tremendous keep up the good work yesterday has gone. Good luck.
Kind Regards
Sam UKIP
