Hain Breaks the Rules

Press Release
North East No Campaign
11th October 2004

"Government Minister Breaches Perdah Period"

Peter Hain in the region today made the statement, "Voters in the North-East should think big and bold about the future of a regional assembly and not worry about the "few extra bob" it will cost to run it."

Trouble for Mr. Hain is that we are now in the official perdah period where the Government can make no further statements.

An official complaint has been made to Douglas Stewart, Head of Referendums at the Electoral Commission.

Neil Herron states, " Government Ministers have had two years to posture and campaign on this subject. It is typical of the contempt that Mr. Hain has for the democratic process that he has chosen to make statements during the official perdah period. We hope, and expect full censure by the Electoral Commission. Other Ministers are planning to come here and campaign as well. We want this nipped in the bud by the Electoral Commission. Such illegality should not be permitted."
