Discontent over poll in North East
From Mr Phillip Evans

Sir,

I believe that the Government is manipulating our electoral practice inorder to promote a contentious and divisive policy — the partition ofEngland into Euro-regions and its effective termination as a political unit.We were to have had ballots in all of England’s so-called regions, butindifference forced a retreat into Labour’s supposed heartlands in theNorth. Subsequent research revealed that Prescott’s follies would bedecisively rejected on either side of the Pennines, so now the last ditch isbeing dug in the North East.Latterly, the Electoral Commission’s damning report on recent experimentswith postal ballots (report, August 27) has surely killed this brainlessidea stone dead, yet bizarrely the same body is backing this very method forthe North East assembly referendum (report, August 28).We are left with a single vote in the region selected by the Government asthe most likely to produce the desired result, employing a discreditedpolling method for the same reason. This seems to me to be Blairism reducedto its bankrupt essence: cynical and corrupt.
Yours sincerely,

From Mr Tony Richmond
Sir,
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has sent me a brochure toencourage me to have my say in the forthcoming referendum on a regionalassembly. It features pictures showing people with their thumbs either up ordown.Perhaps it is a coincidence that the people with their thumbs up look youngand vigorous, are smiling and are obviously going places, while those withtheir thumbs down are shown in downbeat surroundings, look older and appearthoroughly miserable.More objective information is given in a note on the material of thebooklet, which I am happy to see is 75 per cent post-consumer waste and 25per cent pulp.
Yours faithfully,
TONY RICHMOND,
