Irish road metrication - A warning for us

Press reports today claim a success for the change to metric road signs in Ireland. Actually it has been an abject failure if the report in the Irish Examiner and other Irish papers are correct:

Garda blitz needed to curb carnage
Irish Examiner

COMING amid one of the worst periods of carnage ever witnessed on Ireland's roads, the news that two out of three drivers are breaking the speed limit on lethal rural stretches represents a wake-up call for the gardaĆ to enforce the rules more robustly.
Despite Coalition pledges to address the mounting fatalities, the toll continues to escalate.
Shockingly, eight people died on the roads between Sunday and yesterday morning, bringing the new year count to 50.
Words cannot describe the impact of such carnage on the families of those cut off before their time. Unfortunately, however, the bleak outlook is that the utterly senseless loss of life on our roads looks set to continue.
Despite a reduction in the speed limit, following the conversion to a metric system, a new survey by the National Roads Authority shows the incidence of speeding on regional roads increased dramatically in the past year."
