They just don't get it, do they...

In an act of unbelievable arrogance, Ken Manton, the Labour Leader of Durham County Council, declares that he will push ahead with his wish for a single council for Co. Durham.

We were told (in Co. Durham) that if the No Vote prevailed then the second vote (for small unitary authorities or one county council) would be irrelevant.

It seems not, politicians, despite getting a right good thumping, think they can just bluster along, insisting they get their own way...or the teddy's out of the pram.

Unbelievable...

Mark,

This isn't about politics, it's about politicians taking the pee out of ordinary folk, working class lads like me, who until a few year back didn't give a stuff about government. Now, happily returned to my home, Co. Durham, I've honestly turned from "not saying boo to anyone" to being sick to the back teeth of the smarmy people who reside over our lives. Just look at this government - never had a proper job between them. Redundancy, worry about your pension - not for any of these muppets.

I'm a Tory, but I've a real unease about politics in general, and don't mind saying it at all.

If this is how folk feel in the North-East, then how do they feel elsewhere? A few weeks back an Italian brought the EU to a standstill with one comment about homosexuality - yet we've had minister after minister telling us that a vote for the No team was a vote for the Tories. They think they can say anything about Tories without any course for redress.

Whatever our individual beliefs, we've got to fight the political class until they realise we won't be pushed around anymore. They are elected to represent us, the people, not, and never to lecture us day after day.

I was invited to Wear Valley's count last Thursday and to emphasise my point not one elected councillor from Wear Valley District Council attended the count. With never a hope of a councillor in these parts - the Tories had four people at the count - I've never witnessed such contempt for democracy.

Don't worry, there's a few in Co. Durham who won't let this opportunity drop, we'll keep their names in the spotlight, they'll have no hiding place. We want the unelected assembly smashed down and our money returned.
