The Letters Editor
Dear Sir / Madam,
It was refreshing to read Alice Miles article, "Labour goes to the shrink" about Prescott's shambolic plan to impose an elected assembly on the North East, and the fact that the public have now turned Prescott's dream into a nightmare of Elm Street proportions.
I must point out that our campaign, the North East No Campaign, has no connections to any political party and we have remained fiercely independent of party politics throughout this campaign. This result was achieved despite the incompetent Electoral Commission's decision to designate 'official' status and funding to a recently formed 'No' campaign.
The post mortem of the North East referendum will uncover startling revelations about a massive political deception on the people of the North East who never asked for this in the first place....manipulation of statistics, disproportionate funding, downright lies and deception, breaches of the purdah period by Government Ministers, a flawed all postal ballot and all going on under the nose of the Electoral Commission who stood idly by and did nothing.
Now the people have spoken and spoken loudly, the landscape of British politics will never be the same again.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Editor,

Congratulations must go to Alice Miles for her article "Labour Goes to the shrink", (page 17, 3rd November.

It skillfully reflects how a well led network of ordinary people, outside of the political establishment, have blown off course the governments regionalisation agenda

This campaign has been built up over several years by ,former street trader, Neil Herron.
It was wrong to describe him as being connected to UKIP, Neil has made every effort to involve members of all parties and none and in the european elections stood as an independent

New Labour andthe Lib Dem's tried to paint all groups hostile to the EU and Regionailsation as being Tories or further to the right. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact they could not even convince their own core supporters to vote Yes

The fact that the established No Campaign led by Neil Herron was deliberately bypassed by the Electoral Commission in its award of public recognition and funds , in favour of a smaller and only recently put together group ,supported by the Tory Party. This does call into question the integrity and judgment of The Electoral Commission

Lastly when the NO vote comes in against all expectations , we must give credit to the man most responsible - John Prescott.

Only John Prescott could have tried to bluff the voters of the North East to vote for the wholesale culling of local councils and centralisation of powers to a cabal of 25 assembly members and then try to convince voters that was devolution.
The fact was hardly any meaningful powers would have been devolved at all

John Prescott may have deluded Westminster that this was devolution but he could not delude the electorate, bless him

What happened to "no connections" to any political party? This post seems to contradict itself!
