Mark,

Although Neil or one of his team may correct me on this matter, I'm of the opinion the UNELECTED Assembly is funded by the 23 local authorities in the North-East, via the Association of North East Councils.

My local district (Wear Valley District Council) contributed £10,452 this year alone - they have two members on the unelected Assembly.

Be careful though, having badgered them (Wear Valley) for information (on their website forum, emails and letters in the media) on this matter for months, eventually getting part of the information I also received a threatening letter from the Leader of the council - basically telling me to back off or legal action against me would commence. They don't like it up em' as Corporal Jones on Dad's Army used to say.

Of course, now the vote has been overwhelmingly against them (politicians) they must surely realise I'll be back on their case.

Ask your local district how much they have contributed?

Cllr M Davey (Leader, Northumberland County Council)is their full member on the EU Committee of the Regions. Cllr O Brown (Wear Valley) is their alternate member.

See: http://www.cor.eu.int/en/presentation/list.htm for the list of members, according to the Committee. It may be that in some cases it's not bang up to date, so some caution is required in wording of letters etc.

Hi Mark,

Legal action was going to be on the grounds of harassment. This is the mindset we're up against. I ask a question, don't get a reply, so I ask again (a week or so later).

After half a dozen emails, none of them answered by the Leader of the council (how accountable is that to the public she serves!), I receive a nasty letter posted directly to me. How do you work out an address from an email?

However, the Freedom of Information Act, the Act that allowed the recent publication of MP's expenses rolls out shortly. They will then be forced to act on any question asked - I believe it is merely "optional" to reply to questions at present - but hey, that's democracy!!

Dear Anonymous,

With reference to the committee of the regions, I'm aware of Olive Brown's (Wear Valley's Leader) position as the alternative member, but I'd be grateful for any information, or where to find it, as to how her trips to Brussels etc are funded.

As with my own dealings over the Assembly with Wear Valley, a near perfect column in a local paper highlighted Olive Brown as an alternative member of the committee of the regions and why she was on it and that we must be paying for it somehow. The paper was threatened with legal action, for seemingly daring to ask questions, and getting one comment slightly wrong.

PS. Olive Brown, despite being on all these extra duties, found time to accept an 84% increase in allowances from the District Council.
